Bristol’s week in Film: August 28-September 3 2020

This week’s big news is the reopening of the Watershed on Tuesday 1 September, with films screening from Thursday 3. To emphasise the uniqueness of the big-screen experience, they’re kicking off with a programme of Films That Love the Cinema. Take you pick from the ever popular, locally produced Bait; powerful reminder of the importance of cinema, Talking About Trees; and, for hardcore arthouse enthusiasts, Portuguese auteur Pedro Costa’s Vitalina Varela.

Fact fans may wish to note that the Watershed is the seventh Bristol cinema to reopen after lockdown. We’re still waiting on the Odeon, Cube and Cineworld.

Bank holiday brings three days of previews of the allegedly final X-Men flick, The New Mutants, with our very own Maisie Williams coming over all toothy and growly. It’s the second post-lockdown blockbuster to reach cinemas. All eyes are on Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which is hoped to lure punters back in droves. Initial signs are good, with the Showcase chain reporting a 75% rise in advance ticket sales after those first ecstatic reviews were published.
