After Black Panther, Marvel ticks another box on its superdiversity checklist with its very first female-driven superhero movie. (Wonder Woman is a DC character, though confusingly DC also has a character named Captain Marvel. His name – for this one is a bloke – was changed to Shazam for the film version.)
Ms. Marvel, aka Carol Danvers (Brie Larson, Oscar-winning star of Room), is a former US Air Force pilot who’s also a member of the bellicose Kree alien race. How come? Well, one of those pesky DNA mishaps so beloved of superhero yarns grants her super-strength and the ability to fly but also delivers the usual angst when it comes to balancing her human and alien sides. The story has her caught up in a bloody great intergalactic war. The co-directors are Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who made their name with the Oscar nominated Half Nelson back in 2006. Ben Mendelsohn and Djimon Hounsou are on board performing baddie duties.
