On a cold September morning in 1844 a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside. Dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers and an American epic begins. 163 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, and triggers the largest financial crisis in history.
Simon Russell Beale, Ben Miles and Adam Godley star in Oscar-winning American Beauty and Skyfall director Sam Mendes‘s epic yet intimate production of Stefano Massini‘s five-time Olivier Award nominated play tracing the history of Western capitalism, which boasts striking set design by Es Devlin. “Mendes is on the money with astonishing saga,” enthused The Guardian. The play is broadcast live on July 25, with encore screenings to follow.
