Grace (Annette Bening) and Edward (Bill Nighy) have been married for 29 years and live in a small English seaside town near a cove under the cliffs called Hope Gap. When their adult son Jamie (Josh O’Connor) comes to visit for the weekend, Edward reveals that he plans to leave Grace for a younger woman. Nice timing, dude!
Something of a treat for anyone who enjoyed the likes of Marriage Story, 45 Years and The Wife, Oscar nominated Gladiator and Everest writer William Nicholson’s second film as writer/director is another of those marital bust-up dramas that permits a brace of great actors to stretch their emoting muscles. There’s nothing here that we haven’t seen many times before, but the moping is world class and the beachscapes look lovely.
