An American Pickle

Brandon Trost
Running Time
90 mins

Eastern European immigrant Jewish labourer Herschel Greenbaum (Seth Rogan) tumbles into a vast vat of pickle brine in 1920 and is preserved for 100 years. He then emerges perfectly preserved in modern-day Brooklyn to find that his only surviving relative is his hipster computer programmer great-grandson Ben Greenbaum (also Seth Rogan).

All your favourite culture clash and fish-out-of-water gags are duly dusted down for this HBO Max production which is adapted by Simon Rich from his own novella. There are a few swipes at antisemitism along the way, but whimsy and sentiment are the main flavours here, while Rogan excels in his dual roles.
