Acquired taste Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa‘s latest epic ‘docufiction’ is certain to be lapped up by fans of the avant-garde cinema of nothing-much-happening in very long takes, albeit beautifully framed and composed ones. The unconverted may wish to note that even those who laud his work have described this one as ‘demanding’ and ‘challenging’ – not least because its story unfolds in near-total darkness.
Playing herself, the eponymous protagonist is a women from Cape Verde who arrives in Lisbon three days after the funeral of the husband who abandoned her. It’s back on screen in the Watershed’s Films That Love the Cinema season, celebrating the ‘shed’s welcome post-lockdown return to action.
