Bristol’s week in film: January 17-23 2020

Bombshell is this week’s big awards season release (three Oscar nominations and three BAFTAs nods, all in the same categories) starring lots of white folks – including multiple nominee Margot Robbie. But there are also some interesting new films by and about apparently ineligible black people, notably Just Mercy and Waves.

The fabulous annual Slapstick Festival kicks off this week too, with a curtain-raiser in the form of She Done Him Wrong to celebrate Cary Grant’s birthday. Further chuckles are available courtesy of the Bristol Bad Film Club, whose screening of Death Spa provides the perfect opportunity to ditch any health and fitness resolutions you may be struggling with. Oh, and the Cinema De Lux and Vue Cribbs Causeway cinemas have previews of Terry Gilliam’s exceedingly long-gestating The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, with a recorded Gilliam Q&A.
