Finally: it’s the film that Terry Gilliam spent nearly 30 years trying to make. Even the initial ‘making of’ documentary, Lost in La Mancha, was released 18 years ago. All of which has overshadowed the film itself, which was finally unveiled at Cannes last year. A loose adaptation of the Cervantes novel, it has an elderly shoemaker (Jonathan Pryce) becoming convinced that he is, in fact, Don Quixote, having played the character in a student film. What’s more, he now mistakes the film’s director (Adam Driver) for his loyal squire Sancho Panza. After all the well chronicled slog, reviews were mixed, with many critics finding it a bit of a mess. Still, as The Guardian observed: “[Gilliam’s] intelligence and joy in his work shine out of every frame, and his individuality is a delight when so much of mainstream cinema seems to have been created by algorithm.” And, in keeping with the film’s troubled history, even the release has attracted lawsuits.
This preview screening will be followed by a recorded Q&A with Terry Gilliam.
