Formerly unprolific Terrence Malick‘s late-career creative spurt has yielded mixed results, with the likes of To the Wonder and Knight of Cups proving particularly divisive. This time he’s working with a tighter script based on the true story of Austrian peasant farmer and conchie Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl), who was executed during WWII for refusing to fight for the Nazis and was later beatified by the Catholic Church.
Despite this – and as usual with Malik – reviews have been sharply divided between those who consider it “an exploratory, intensely romantic work of art” (the LA Times) and dissenters who reckon “all it has to offer is soft-focus piousness” (Time). Bottom line: if you’re already a Malik convert, you’ll lap this up; others should approach with caution.
