Bristol’s Week in Film: July 24-30 2020

There are a couple of new releases ready to greet the trickle of returning cinema punters this week. Exuberant drag queen comedy Stage Mother has inevitably been dubbed “the new Priscilla” and certainly benefits from the casting of the estimable Jacki Weaver. In normal circumstances, queer-friendly indie flick Saint Frances might have been expected to show up at the Watershed or Cube. But as both of those venues remain closed and there are no competing blockbusters on the horizon, it’s playing mainstream cinemas instead.

If you prefer the safety of the great outdoors, you’ll be relieved to know that Bristol’s first drive-in cinema kicks off at Ashton Gate this weekend with screenings of two comedies: Anchorman and Cool Runnings. Let’s hope no one takes offence at all the racial sterotyping in the latter, eh?

Other than that, there are plenty more classic reissues on the big screen. For those who like a larf, this week brings Withnail and I and When Harry Met Sally. For those who don’t, feast on Oldboy and Battle Royale instead. Oh, and the Cinema De Lux is wheeling out all three parts of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy over the next few weeks, beginning with The Fellowship of the Ring.
