Bristol’s week in film: July 10-16 2020

Ready to go back to the pictures? Bristol’s very slow re-opening commences this week with just two cinemas throwing open their doors: the Orpheus in Henleaze and Showcase’s Cinema De Lux in Cabot Circus.

To tempt you back, tickets are pegged at a fiver (or possibly less with concessions) and all kinds of protective and social distancing measures have been put in place. Following a rejig of the schedules, no major new releases are now planned until August, which means smaller films have a chance to mop up the cinemagoing loot of brave returning punters. This week, for example, the big film is Australian killer croc flick Black Water: Abyss.

There’s also an opportunity to catch up with – or revisit – some of the January to March releases, such as Oscar-winner Parasite, 1917, Queen & Slim and Just Mercy. Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back gets a 40th anniversary reissue, and is joined on the big screen by such classics as Lawrence of Arabia, The Matrix and Pulp Fiction. Elsewhere, the accent is on post-lockdown uplift, with no shortage of musicals, from Mamma Mia! and Grease to La La Land.
