Comedy sidekicks in animated movies always have the most fun. Unlike the boring heroes, who shoulder the burden of driving the story forward and learning all kinds of tedious, moralising life lessons, they can just misbehave and hoover up laughs with impunity. Little wonder audiences love them so much that they eventually get rewarded with their own films. In the wake of Puss in Boots (from Shrek) and Penguins of Madagascar (from, er, Madagascar), the little yellow minions from the Despicable Me flicks struck out on their own for this henchperson origin story.
By the 20th century, they’ve gone into a decline because their evil mastermind employers have a habit of meeting sticky ends. But they eventually team up with the world’s first female supervillain, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), in the 1960s.
