New Film Releases: May 17-23 2019

The oddly titled John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is this week’s big(ish) new release. But as Avengers: Endgame rapidly deflates, there are some proper-job blockbusters on the horizon, two of which are previewed on Wednesday and Thursday: Rocketman – the Elton John biopic that’s certain to spawn a thousand “the new Bohemian Rhapsody” headlines – and Disney’s latest live-action makeover, Aladdin. Also previewed at many cinemas on Monday is the well-received, F-rated indie comedy, Booksmart.

Three directors come to the Watershed to hawk their wares this week, starting with Brian Welsh on Beats (Friday) and continuing with László Nemes on Sunset (Saturday) and Naziha Arebi on Freedom Fields (Thursday).

Did you know it’s both the 80th anniversary of Batman’s first appearance in a comicbook and the 30th anniversary of Tim Burton’s first Batman flick? That’s all the excuse Warner Brothers needs to pump out four Batman flicks into the cinemas in 4K remastered form in the hope of shifting serious quantities of those newly issued blu-rays. Burton’s two films and – somewhat less excitingly – the Joel Schumacher follow-ups can be seen in various permutations, including a bum-numbing marathon of all four at the Vue Cribbs Causeway.
