Something of a departure for French director Claire Denis, this is both her English language debut and her first feature-length venture into science fiction (impress your arthouse chums by observing that her very first film was a student short based on Frederik Pohl’s The Tunnel Under the World).
Needless to say, this puts a Solaris-style existential spin on the genre by firing Robert Pattinson into space with a bunch of fellow death row inmates on a suicidal mission to explore black holes. Dastardly ship’s doc Juliette Binoche, meanwhile, is conducting sinister reproductive tests on her captive population. If that’s not intriguing enough for you, The Guardian‘s over-excited reviewer observed that: “High Life contains the single greatest one-person sex scene in the history of cinema.”
