During a fight between rival gangs, mobster’s moll Qiao (director Jia Zhangke‘s partner and regular collaborator Tao Shao) fires a gun to protect her lover, Bin (Fan Liao) – an act of loyalty that gets her five years in the slammer. But when she emerges after doing her porridge, she finds that Chinese society in general, and Bin and his milieu in particular, have changed radically.
Lauded Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke’s follow-up to Mountains May Depart has been acclaimed by The Guardian as “an often glorious drama about how one woman’s journey from self-sacrificial moll to avenging criminal echoes her country’s embrace of capitalism.”
