Can’t get enough of the A Star Is Born remake? This new Britcom should have you singing a happy song. TV talent show veteran and Beast star Jessie Buckley is cast as Rose-Lynn Harlen – a big-hearted, take-no-shit Glaswegian ex-jailbird with a yen for singing C&W.
Emerging from the Big House with an ankle braclet attached, she returns to a grim housing estate to be reunited with her two young children. Her mother (Julie Walters) has little time for Rose-Lynn’s Nashville dreams, but our heroine finds an unlikely champion in the form of middle-class boho Susannah (Sophie Okonedo), who hires her as a cleaner. Yep, this musical drama from Tom Harper (who directed Buckley in the Beeb’s War & Peace) is as formulaic as, well, an old country song, but critics have been charmed by its lack of cynicism and that boisterous, engaging lead performance.
