Doddery old biddy Joan Stanley (Judi Dench) enjoys a quiet retirement pottering around her garden until the rozzers turn up mob-handed to bust her for treason. Under interrogation back at the cop shop, her 40 year career of passing state secrets to the KGB is exposed in a series of flashbacks featuring Sophie Cookson as the young Joan.
Inspired by the true story of Commie spy Melita Norwood, Trevor Nunn‘s drama has failed to convert many critics, the consensus being that it’s another sedate heritage drama with barely a hint of a pulse. “Tweedy, dreary and unconvincing” was Variety’s verdict.
