Tom Hanks‘ vacation at home in suburbia is shattered by neighbours Bruce Dern (neo-psycho Vietnam vet) and Rick Ducommun (fat slob), who try to convince him that there’s something sinister about new family on the block the Klopeks, whose Munster-style dwelling shakes mysteriously at night.
Like director Joe Dante‘s previous film, Explorers, this is pleasingly unconventional filmmaking, combining marvellous acting, a personal vision of the nightmare heart of America, a gonzo comedy style and a host of cinematic in-jokes.
