Bristol’s week in film: September 4-10 2020

Tenet and The New Mutants continue to pack in the punters, defying those who predicted the death of cinema thanks to Covid-19. This week brings Ladj Ly’s much-acclaimed Les Misérables, which was inspired by the 2005 Paris riots and unfolds in the suburb where Victor Hugo set his novel. Another of those films that were delayed by the pandemic, it seems even more topical in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests.

If you fancy going al fresco, the @TheDriveIn drive-in cinema in the romantic surroundings of a car park at Bristol Airport kicks off on Thursday.

Down at the Watershed, they’re celebrating their reopening with a Films That Love the Cinema season, which takes in classics (North by Northwest, Sunset Boulevard) alongside more recent releases, such as the striking Senegalese supernatural drama Atlantics.

The multiplexes continue to revive old favourites. This week you can see all three parts of Edgar Wright’s Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End). Also back on screen is Black Panther, in tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.
