“The most talked about movie of the year is one that no one’s actually seen” screamed the advance publicity for this Blumhouse horror/thriller, whose release was shelved last September in the wake of the Dayton and El Paso shootings, following criticism by President Trump. Hey – you can’t buy that sort of publicity.
It’s adapted from Richard Connell‘s 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game, which was previously filmed by John Woo as Hard Target. The film follows 12 strangers (“deplorables”) who find themselves hunted in a game organised by members of a mysterious elite. Some critics have interpreted this as being an allegory in which liberals hunt down supporters of Trump, although Universal denied claims that the film’s working title was Red State vs Blue State.
