Japanese cafe and deli opening soon

By Martin Booth  Thursday Apr 11, 2024

A new Japanese cafe and deli which will also be selling records is set to open at the end of May.

Lonely Mouth specialises in Japanese soul food, with their first bricks and mortar premises following popular pop-ups at locations including the Plough in Easton, the Volunteer Tavern in St Jude’s and Kitchen by Kask on North Street.

Food from Lonely Mouth has previously included small plates such as gimmari, karaage, oshizushi, ramen and sonburi rice bowls.

“It’s been in the making for a couple of months now but @lonelymouthuk has a permanent home!” wrote Lonely Mouth founder Olivia Maxwell-Yates on Instagram.

“Right now we’re just in the building/painting/decorating stage but we’re hoping to be open at the end of May.

“Think Japanese cafe/deli, records, coffees, matcha and more. Can’t wait to update you all on how it’s going and to see all your lovely faces once we open. Big love. To no more lonely mouths!”

Lonely Mouth is set to open on Gloucester Road in what was most recently Burra before it relocated to North Street.

Olivia began cooking in 2016 after spending a year in Australia where she had also visited Japan.

She said: “I immediately fell in love with their culture, people and most importantly their food. Since then I’ve been a woman obsessed. Self teaching myself Japanese cuisine and all its wonders.

“From fermentation, to the constant pursuit of umami, raw fish, the soft and chewy perfect rice.”
