Fundraiser for local legend ‘Pirate Pete’ after theft
An 85-year-old local legend is appealing for donations after having his mobility scooter stolen.
Peter Martin, known as ‘Pirate Pete’, has been running historical walking tours for 25 years – but is now struggling to do so after losing his way of getting around.
Martin’s car was stolen on June 11 after one thief distracted him by offering to help him with his mobility scooter while another got into the vehicle and drove off.

The car was scrapped and he lost everything inside, including his mobility scooter and his cherished pirate paintings.
This was only a couple months after he had his passport and driving license stolen in a house burglary.
Last Friday, 36-year-old Shaun Hartrey and 39-year-old Hayley Teale from Knowle were jailed for 30 and 20 weeks respectively after admitting the theft at Bristol Magistrates’ Court.

“It’s been the most miserable month of my life,” said Martin, who also hurt his knee during the car theft.
“I’m really annoyed about it because I have been doing pirate walks every day for 25 years, even Christmas day.
“I’ve taken 200,000 people on the walks.”
Without his mobility scooter, Martin is unable to run the tours and is looking at a £500 cost to buy a new one.
There is some light at the end of the tunnel though. His neighbour has set up a fundraiser to help him, and Martin said the public support he has received after the theft has lifted his spirits.
“It was amazing,” he said. “You’ve given up at 85. I thought my life was over – but suddenly people were recognising me.”
