Friends open second Bristol cafe

By Betty Woolerton  Sunday Nov 12, 2023

A new ‘Antipodean-style’ cafe has opened in Southville.

Burra is owned by current Bristol Bears player Jake Heenan and former teammate Luke Morahan, and Bears chief operating officer, Tom Tainton.

Their latest venture on North Street in what used to be the Faraway Tree comes after they closed their Gloucester Road cafe in October.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The new cafe and brunch and lunch joint joins the trio’s original Burra cafe on on Lower Redland Road.

On Sunday, 200 free coffees from Extract Coffee were given out to the first customers through the door, as well as tickets to see Bristol City Women play Aston Villa at Aston Gate later that day.

Burra has opened its first cafe in South Bristol

Ingredients used on the menu are all sourced from within a 25-mile radius of Bristol. This includes eggs from Good Egg Company in Trowbridge, salmon from Valley Smokehouse in Ashbridge, milk from Chew Valley Dairy, dried goods from Wild Oats in Redland and cakes from Flour Bloom in Speedwell.

For brunch options, there are dishes such as feta and eggs (£12.60), pulled pork on toast (£13.10) and homemade beans on toast (£8.80) as well as French toast (£8.20) and granola (£6.90).

Lunch options include salmon rice bowl (£13.60) and sweetcorn and plantain fritters (£12.60) and buns filled with ‘brekkie’ (£9.10), avocado and cauliflower (£9.10) among other options.

Posting on social media, the Burra team said: “After an amazing 18 months in Horfield, we closed our doors for the final time as we relocate to North Street and an exciting new chapter for Burra begins.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to our staff, suppliers and, most importantly, all of our incredible customers who made our Gloucester Road cafe such a welcoming and special environment.”
