Potter wants to bring craft back to high street at new space
Pottery courses, creative workshops and pop-up events will all be taking place at Finnerty Ceramics.
The new space is the brainchild of Rebecca Finnerty, a ceramicist whose plates and cups you are likely to have eaten off or drank out of if you have visited places including Full Court Press, Hem or Root.
Rebecca will continue making her own tableware for cafes and restaurants at her studio in Barton Hill while also teaching some classes in her eponymous business which officially opens its doors for the first time on Saturday.

“I’m trying to bring craft back to the high street,” said Rebecca on a recent afternoon as the finishing touches were being applied in the former hairdressers on Church Road in St George.
“We wanted to create a beautiful space which feels like people in our community made it.”

“I’m all about the process, not the outcome,” explained Rebecca, who grew up in Dublin.
Rebecca wants Finnerty Ceramics to be somewhere she can facilitate other makers and has already put a call-out for people to use the space.
Rebecca’s husband Doug – who she met while working as a barista at Hart’s Bakery (also the first place to sell her pottery) – has built every item of furniture here.
It’s a small place with only four people at a time able to take part in throwing workshops for example; with other future workshops set to include jewellery making.

“I am a local maker who now owns this space and I really wanted to pull in other small businesses and other small makers,” Rebecca said.
“Where possible we’ve tried to have the people in this community make the space and use the space and hopefully it can just be a really lovely community thing.”
Workshops at Finnerty Ceramics at 294 Church Road in St George start in September and will be available to be booked from Saturday via www.finnertyceramics.com
