Cuban cafe from team behind Cafe Cuba opens

By Mia Vines Booth  Thursday Feb 8, 2024

A new cafe selling Cuban sandwiches, coffee and trinkets has opened on Cheltenham Road.

Morales Cafe has opened in the site formerly occupied by Lisa’s Chocolates, which closed earlier this year, and will be run by the two daughters of the owner of popular restaurant Cafe Cuba, a stone’s throw away on Stokes Croft.

Cafe Cuba owner, Osvaldo Morales, was helping his two daughters, Ana and Omara, put up the new cafe’s sign on Thursday.

A lunch menu offers empanadas, arepas and fried plantain alongside milkshakes and coffee

Ana and Omara seem to have carried on the legacy of Lisa’s Chocolates, with boxes of sweet truffles packaged alongside vegan raspberry dark chocolate thins and El Maya, a chilli dark chocolate. Cuban ashtrays, postcards, keyrings and vinyls are also on display.

The sisters will serve coffee, milkshakes, sandwiches and Cuban specials from the new cafe, which was already attracting curious visitors on Thursday as they ducked under the ladder for a coffee.

Cassava empanadas, pulled pork arepas and avocado and plantain sandwiches are all on the menu, alongside fresh fruit milkshakes like kiwi, piña colada and ‘coco loco’.

“This cafe has more of a chilling vibe,” laughs Anna, as her dad screws in the last section of the cafe’s sign.
