Lane closures on roundabout as preparatory work begins
Works have started at Bedminster Bridges roundabout ahead of construction beginning in the autumn to radically alter its road layout.
Investigatory and preparatory works are due to take place for around three weeks on the twin bridges, and part of Redcliff Hill and Bedminster Parade.
Lanes are now closed to allow works including trial digs to find the exact position of underground utilities, a detailed inspection of Bedminster Old Bridge and removing 15 trees.
The initial works will help plan for the refurbishment of the bridges and changes to how each bridge is used which will see Bedminster Old Bridge becoming two-way for buses and taxis only, and Bedminster New Bridge becoming two-way for general traffic.
New segregated cycle paths will also be built, there will be quicker crossings and more pavement space for pedestrians, and 50 trees planted to replace those felled.

Ed Plowden, chair of the transport & connectivity committee, said: “I am pleased that these essential investigatory works are getting underway and that they will take place outside the busiest times, so will hopefully not cause too much disruption in the area.
“The need to remove trees from this area was included in the public consultation we ran in 2024.
“Along with many people, I will be disappointed to see them go, but I understand this is the best option to achieve this exciting transformation.
“They will make way for the separated cycle paths and wider pavements needed to make travelling over the bridges safer for the many thousands of people who walk, wheel and cycle to and from the south of Bristol towards the city centre.
“It will also mean we can change the road layout to unlock bus speed and reliability improvements.”
Three trees will be removed from the north side of the roundabout, and eight trees from the south side. Three trees will also be removed from within the now-closed Redcliff Hill subway and one small tree on York Road.
