Thomas Chatterton’s house to let
A ‘to let’ sign has appeared outside Thomas Chatterton’s former house on Redcliffe Way advertising possible future uses as a restaurant or cafe.
The building has in recent years been left to crumble but an £80,000 refurbishment could now give it a new lease of life.
Bristol’s boy poet was born in the house almost opposite St Mary Redcliffe in 1752. His life ended only 17 years later when he committed suicide in London, with his influence only posthumous.
The council-owned house has can be rented out to a leaseholder who would have to pay for their own internal fittings.
The Thomas Chatterton Society, who have been working with the council to get the house renovated, hope that whatever the future use of the house, it might be used for poetry readings and other ways to recognise Chatterton’s work.
