Crowdfunder to help rebuild pub and install bollards after crash
The day after a driver crashed their car through their front wall, the Merchants Arms was back open for business.
The Hotwells hostelry has a refitted front door despite feeling darker than usual inside due to the recent evisceration of a window.
A crowdfunder set up to help rebuild the pub and hopefully install bollards in front of the building has already raised more than £1,700.
Sarah Craig, a member of staff at the Merchants Arms, was working behind the bar when the car careered into it at around 9.30pm on Sunday evening, injuring four punters who were sitting inside.
Introducing the crowdfunder, Sarah said: “Our beloved local pub has always been more than just a place to grab a drink – it’s the heart of our community.
“It’s where friendships are built, stories are shared and everyone is made to feel welcome.
“Recently, that sense of safety was shaken when a car crashed through the wall of the pub due to the dangerous bend in the road outside.
“Thankfully, no lives were lost, but the damage has left our community hub in urgent need of repair.

Sarah added: “We’re coming together to raise funds to rebuild the pub and, just as importantly, to install protective safety pillars to prevent something like this from ever happening again.
“These improvements will help ensure that our friends, families and regulars can continue to gather in a space that feels safe and secure.
“Every donation, no matter how small, will make a real difference. If you’re unable to give, sharing this fundraiser would mean the world to us.
“Let’s come together to protect and restore a place that has given so much to all of us. Thank you for your support.”
