New Film Releases: May 31-June 6 2019

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is this week’s biggie in both 2D and 3D, though there’s some smart counter-programming in the form of the F-rated Booksmart. The industry is clearly calculating that women are less likely than men to be interested in an FX-laden monster smackdown. Those who crave even more fantasy action, meanwhile, will be overjoyed to find previews of X-Men: Dark Phoenix from Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan returns to the multiplexes for D-Day, Bristol Film Festival has boozy screenings of both Four Weddings and a Funeral and Casablanca in Averys’ wine cellar, and Peter Strickland comes to the Watershed for a preview of his latest giallo-style arthouse horror In Fabric.
