The ‘taming’ of wild wilful Katherine by her brutal hubby Petruchia makes for the least woke of Shakespeare’s plays, the (contested) view that it is no more than an unedifying exercise in misogyny gaining ground in recent years. This has led to several ‘reimaginings’.
Justin Audibert‘s new RSC production opts for the most obvious twist: a gender-swap makeover set in a matriarchy. He retains the names, so Katherine is played by a bloke (Joseph Arkley) while Petruchia is a woman (Claire Price).
