National Theatre Encore: Small Island

Director
Rufus Norris
Certificate
15
Running Time
170 mins

Tracing the journey from Jamaica to Britain from WWII to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury – Small World intertwines three stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots.

Adapted by Helen Edmundson from Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize-winning novel and directed by Rufus Norris with a compnay of 40 actors, Small World is broadcast live on June 27 to mark NT Live’s 10th birthday, with encore screenings to follow. You may wish to note that the play has been rated 15 for its use of authentic racially offensive language.
