Having done Ayrton Senna and Amy Winehouse, ace documentarian Asif Kapadia completes what he’s described as his trilogy of films “about child geniuses and fame” with an exploration of the life of, and controversy surrounding, Argentinean football star Diego Maradona.
Unlike Kapadia’s two previous subjects, Maradona is still alive, so m’learned friends were consulted and Maradona himself had to be persuaded to take part. Fortunately, he enjoyed Senna and was happy to trust the director. But as Kapadia swiftly discovered, Maradona is not the most reliable narrator of his own story.
