Clearly, what the film industry has been lacking of late is superhero movies. So here’s the 12th X-Men flick, which is also billed as the seventh and final (yeah, right) film in the main X-Men series. It’s a direct sequel to Bryan Singer’s bloated and repetitive 2016 X-Men: Apocalypse, which succeeded in underwhelming critics and nerds alike. The latter still went to see it in large enough numbers to ensure that the series trundles on.
Dark Phoenix is the directorial debut of Simon Kinberg, who’s served as writer and producer on previous episodes, and reunites all the younger members of the X-Men gang (Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, etc) for a romp in which a cosmic mishap leads to Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) unleashing her dastardly Dark Phoenix alter ego.
