After the lightweight frothy fun of I’m So Excited, Pedro Almodovar returns to familiar territory for his 20th film with the kind of female-centric melodrama that only he can pull off successfully.
Based on a trio of Alice Munro short stories and spanning three decades with two actresses (Emma Saurez, Adriana Ugarte) as the titular character, the film introduces us to the older Juanita, who’s about to leave Madrid for Portugal with her new partner. A chance meeting in the street then reminds her of her daughter Antia, whom she hasn’t seen for 13 years. Cue: flashbacks to the punky young Julieta in the 1980s as Alomodovar unravels a primary-coloured mystery that involves a complex mother-daughter relationship, infidelity, a dash of tragedy and that old Talk to Her favourite: a character in a coma.
