New Film Releases: June 14-20 2019

Who’d have predicted that it would be pissing with rain in the middle of ‘flaming June’? Still, at least some people are happy. The folks who work in the cinema exhibition industry are weeping tears of joy. Given an, ahem, ‘barbecue summer’, it can be a real challenge to drag punters in off the street to watch even the biggest and bestest blockbusters, let alone the mediocre ones. But now it’s the turn of outdoor events organisers to weep. And those aren’t tears of joy.

All of which is good news for what one can hardly describe as the eagerly anticipated Men in Black International (“charmless and pointless” – The Guardian), which is the biggest new release of the week. Should that not appeal and you’re still in need of warmth and shelter, there’s always lauded documentarian Asif Kapadia’s Diego Maradona, which is showing in multiplexes and arthouse cinemas alike.

Elsewhere, the Doc’n Roll film festival continues at the Watershed until Sunday. The ‘shed also has a Q&A with the director of refugee doc The Movement on Tuesday. The Italian Job gets a 50th anniversary re-release on Sunday afternoon. And the big event cinema broadcast is The Merry Wives of Windsor live from Shakespeare’s Globe.

Fortunately, there are no outdoor cinema screenings scheduled for this week.
