The Merry Wives of Windsor Live from the Globe

Director
Nicole Charles, Elle While
Certificate
12A
Running Time
180 mins

Finding himself a tad impecunious on arrival in Windsor, roguish fatty Falstaff (Pearce Quigley) sets out to seduce a pair of wealthy married women: Mistress Page (Sarah Finigan) and Mistress Ford (Bryony Hannah). The ladies quickly rumble the old fool because he’s sent them identical love letters. Having no interest in this rotund seducer, they turn the tables with a series of humiliating assignations.

Shakespeare’s only play about the middle classes and the only one he set in his native land, the bawdy Merry Wives of Windsor is a clear influence on many a modern sitcom. Directed by Nicole Charles and Elle While, this new production draws influences from 1930s British music, dance and fashion. It’s broadcast live from the Globe Theatre.
