UK Independent Crisp Tasting Championships take place in Bristol pub
Four exclamations came in quick succession at an upstairs function room on St Michael’s Hill: “Oh! Yeah! Mmm! Alright!”
It was soon after 6pm on Saturday and the second annual UK Independent Crisp Tasting Championships were in full flow at the Robin Hood pub.
Anyone could take part by picking up a pair of tongs at the front door and then sampling the wares on offer, moving around the pub to vote in ten sub-categories and then for the overall winner.
A faint fog of potatoes, oil and salt hung over the hostelry as people queued patiently.
Would gammon and pineapple win the most unique flavour? Would truffle and rosemary take home best texture? And what on earth does a cheese seaweed crisp taste like?
The Robin Hood co-owner Theo Cernow-Cooke was on refill duties for much of the duration of the competition, ensuring that the supply of crisps did not run out.
Theo said that the UK Independent Crisp Tasting Championships is first and foremost about fun: “We absolutely love crisps and this felt like a good enough excuse to celebrate them properly.”
