Bookshop owner crowdfunding in ‘one last plea’ to save business

By Martin Booth  Friday Jul 17, 2026

The owner of a bookshop is making “one last plea” in an effort to save her business.

Monika Killer opened the Haunted Bookshop on Stokes Croft in 2024 but has recently struggled financially; being unable to pay basic bills, startup business loan repayments or purchase new stock.

“We’ve fallen behind, and I have exhausted all of my resources, financial and emotional,” wrote Monika on Instagram.

“At this point, I’m not sure we can make it to the end of summer.”

The Hidden Bookshop specialises in occult, folklore, horror and fantasy books; sells a collection of handmade goods created by Bristol makers; and hosts monthly ‘Coven Nights’.

A crowdfunder to save the shop has so far raised more than £2,500 out of a target of £20,000.

Monika wrote: “A couple of months ago, I decided to give the shop till January, and if things don’t get better, I’d have to count my losses and accept that this dream isn’t going to come true.

“However, it seems that the shop’s time is running out faster than I anticipated…

“Asking for help is not something that comes easily to me. But I know that this shop is not just mine – it’s important to so many of you.

“We have built a beautiful community, and the best part of my day is always hearing about your love and care for this spooky little corner of Stokes Croft.”

Monika added: “I understand that this is a big ask, but if all of our followers donated less than the cost of a cup of coffee, we could save the shop.

“We could pay off our suppliers, cover our bills and grow.

“We could continue to host community events and make them more affordable, support local artists and creators, and fill our shelves with the books YOU are excited to read.

“This isn’t just about saving a bookshop. It’s about preserving a beautiful community and a safe space for all of us weirdos.”
