Double dose of Dredd launches new science fiction film screening company

By Robin Askew  Thursday Sep 22, 2022

The 1995 Sylvester Stallone Judge Dredd goes head-to-head with the 2012 Karl Urban incarnation at the former Bristol IMAX cinema inside the Aquarium this autumn in the inaugural event organised by Screens of Matter – a new community interest company founded by local producer Emmeline Rodman, who has long believed that the city needs a dedicated science fiction cinema.

“I want to create a space where people can be weird, together,” Emmeline tells us. “It might be that you see the world differently or seek unworldly experiences. I feel there’s a tribe out there that hopefully want to help make it happen in Bristol.”

Screens of Matter also has another mission: to attract and support neurodiverse audiences (i.e. those living with a range of conditions including Attention Deficit Disorders, Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia).

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Proudly neurodiverse herself, having been diagnosed with ADHD and Dyslexia, Emmeline observes that: “Feeling different in your everyday life isn’t always easy. Science fiction to me is the ultimate escapism, exploring anything from artificial intelligence to man-eating plants. Many films feature misfits trying to navigate their way through an alien world. It’s OK for everything not to make sense.”

The Judge Dredd/Dredd double-bill is screened on Sunday 13 November, starting at 1:30pm. Early bird tickets go on sale on the Screens of Matter website on Thursday 22 September.
