Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ to be screened in Bristol on 35mm
Remember when films were shot on, er, film and exhibited by projecting strips of celluloid onto a screen? Well, us old-timers aren’t alone in this digital age, as one of our leading directors, Christopher Nolan, is a great champion of such old-timey analogue techniques. His latest film, The Odyssey, is one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated releases. It opens on Fri 17 July, and Bristol’s Watershed is one of the few cinemas in the country still equipped to screen it on good old-fashioned 35mm.

Not only that, but the ‘shed is also taking the opportunity to trumpet its commitment to analogue cinema with a season of 35mm screenings on Sundays throughout July, entitled Cinematic Odysseys on 35mm. Next up are Gladiator on July 12 and the splendid Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World on July 19.

The Watershed is also demonstrating its ongoing commitment to analogue cinema by training the next generation of projectionists. “I feel privileged to have learnt a skill that is so important to film heritage and to be carrying these skills on to the next generation,” says Patrick Welsh, the Watershed’s youngest projectionist. “I’m 25 and from Bristol, so to be a part of one of the few venues in the South West to be continuing using this method of projection feels really exciting.”
