Great South Korean director Lee Chang-dong follows the acclaimed Poetry with this slow-burning Ruth Rendell/Patricia Highsmith-style mystery simmering with themes of class, sexual jealousy and male rage, which is actually adapted from a short story by Haruki Murakami.
When nerdy aspiring writer and country boy Jongsu (Yoo Ah-in) bumps into childhood chum Haemi (Jeon Jong-seo), they embark on a romance. So besotted is he that he agrees to look after her cat when she goes on holiday to Africa. But Haemi doesn’t return alone. At the airport, Jongsu finds her accompanied by rich and hunky playboy Ben (Steven Yeun from Sorry to Bother You). Naturally, our hero is not best pleased. But then he learns about Ben’s unusual hobby and Haemi promptly disappears. Don’t let anyone tell you what happens next, as this finely crafted, expectation-defying psychological thriller builds to an explosive and shocking finale.
