Nicole Kidman is no stranger to the art of uglying down in pursuit of awards glory. Remember that funny, distracting stick-on conk she wore as Virginia Woolf in The Hours? Result: Best Actress Oscar. With Karyn Kusama’s bleak and grimy LA-set crime thriller, she’s really going for broke and has already received a Golden Globe nomination.
She plays a damaged and rather dislikeable detective who went undercover with a criminal gang as a young cop with ‘orrible consequences. Now she’s bent on confronting her demons by tracking down the surviving members. Once again, there are naysayers, with The Guardian observing that: “The makeup is far too ghoulish, reminiscent of Johnny Depp’s extravagant take on Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, the surreal sensation of watching someone walk around with a Halloween costume while everyone else forgot to dress up.” Go here for our review.
