Back in 1973, anthropologist Santiago Genoves launched the controversial Acali Experiment, which was swiftly dubbed the Sex Raft. Eleven demographically diverse strangers – five men and six women – were plonked aboard a tiny raft and cast adrift for 100 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean together. The late Mr. Genoves said he hoped to achieve “peace on earth” with his scientific study of violence, aggression, sex and group behaviour. As is so often the way with such things, this didn’t go according to plan.
Marcus Lindeen‘s award-winning documentary recreates the raft in a studio more than forty years on and invites the seven survivors to reflect on their experiences in what has been described as “one of the strangest group experiments of all time”.
