“Now understood to be one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression, extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behaviour,” asserts the blurb for this US documentary about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) leading to Toxic Stress. It’s an intriguing concept that intuitively makes a lot of sense, though you’re only a Google search away from concerns about the ACE checklist’s rather vague questions (“Did your parents ever swear at you, insult you or put you down?” – who couldn’t answer ‘yes’ to that one?) and its heavy reliance on accurate memories and truthful accounts.
