John Afoa damaged a rib and is expected to return to Ashton Gate by the middle of next month.

The second injury was suffered by full-back Charles Piutau. The former All-black, who signed a new two-year contract last month, is out until late February with a knee ligament injury. It’s also suspected he may have broken his nose after a collision with England star, Jonny May.

The injuries come as a disappointment to the Bears, who take on Brive in the European rugby challenge cup on Saturday, January 11. They will nonetheless be looking for a big win.

After a shaky run of league fixtures in December, Bristol managed to remain dominant in Europe, gaining three bonus point wins in four games and sitting comfortably at the top of their pool, ten points clear.

Bristol’s next league game will be at home to Gloucester on Saturday, January 25, where a bonus-point win could push them into the top four.
