Bristol schools’ Pride network helps LGBTQAI+ students build confidence and belonging
A growing network connecting LGBTQAI+ students across Bristol schools is helping young people feel more supported, included and connected.
The Bristol Education Partnership (BEP) Pride Network, hosted by Bristol Charities, was established after staff at Cotham School identified a need to bring together LGBTQAI+ students and allies from different schools rather than limiting support to individual school Pride groups.
The first network event earlier this year brought together Year 7 to Year 12 students from five schools – Cotham School, Clifton High School, Bridge Learning Campus, Collegiate School and Clifton College – giving young people the opportunity to share experiences and discuss LGBTQAI+ inclusion.

Megan Ingham, a PSHE teacher at Cotham School, said collaboration was particularly important for marginalised communities because it “creates spaces where people feel accepted, included and supported”.
She added: “Creating opportunities for students to connect in a safe environment allows them to share stories, ask questions, and recognise that there is a broader community available to them beyond their immediate school experience.”
Students said the event helped them feel represented and less isolated. One attendee said: “It was really nice to meet people similar to me and learn about their experiences,” while another commented: “I enjoyed how I felt included and seen.”

A teacher from one of the participating schools said pupils “really benefitted from meeting their peers from other schools and having such open conversations”.
Following the success of the first event, the BEP Pride Network has expanded to eight partner schools and is planning further collaborative activities, including a Pride Picnic this month, as it continues to promote inclusion and belonging for LGBTQAI+ students and staff across Bristol.
