The Mimic star rants about renting in Bristol

By Meena Alexander  Wednesday Nov 25, 2015

Comedian and actor Terry Mynott has been left appalled at the state of Bristol’s renting market due to his ongoing struggle to find a property in the city that will allow him to move in with his two cats.

The Mimic star, who spent three years travelling back and forth between Bristol and London whilst filming the Channel 4 series, is now hoping to relocate to the city permanently but has faced difficulty due to many Bristol landlords’ policies on pets.

Mynott has been searching for a flat in Bristol for weeks, and claims he has inquired about 30 different properties and has been turned away from all of them due to a ban on pets.

“I fell in love with Bristol, with Gloucester Road and Bedminster, with the graffiti all over the place – it’s beautiful really,” he told Bristol24/7.

“My wife is from the city and I just think it’s got so much character. If London is New York City, Bristol is Portland, Oregon.”

The actor has dealt with the difficulties of finding a home in his beloved Bristol by venting to his 7,500 Twitter followers about the scores of landlords that have refused him, saying “if you can’t hang pics, paint or have pets then it’s not really a home.”

“These landlords are crushing my little Bristol dream,” he said. “It’s hard to get angry because people are so nice, but it’s an issue that’s bigger than me and my cats, it’s a form of discrimination and it’s about penalising the little man.”

“It’s alright for me, I rattle my little Internet cage and I get some support, but what about the single mum with kids that can’t get a flat next to a school because they don’t allow children? Recently I even heard about two singles who were refused a place because they weren’t in a relationship.”

“People have been really helpful on Twitter but still I haven’t managed to find a place – I really would love to move to Bristol but right now it’s not looking likely.”
