Royal launch for new ss Great Britain project
Ambitious plans for a new museum in old industrial buildings next to the ss Great Britain have been launched by the Duke of York at St James’ Palace.
Being Brunel will allow visitors to explore Brunel’s mind by stepping inside a huge head of the engineer that will fill the height of the museum.
Personal possessions that will be on display for the first time will include Brunel’s cigar case, his personalised penknife and some of his work sketchbooks.
Addressing guests at St James’s Palace, Prince Andrew said: “Being Brunel will be more than a museum, it will be a resource to inspire a new generation of engineers. It’s incredible to think that this man is as relevant today as he was then.”
The ss Great Trust now needs to raise £1.4m out of a total project cost of £7m to make the ambitious plans a reality.
