‘Phased closure’ of shopping centre ahead of redevelopment
A shopping centre in south Bristol whose lack of shops makes the Galleries look positively buoyant is now undergoing a “phased closure” ahead of the site’s redevelopment into hundreds of new flats and houses.
Following concerns from the community about the scale of the original proposals, a revised planning application for Redcatch Quarter has now been submitted to Bristol City Council.
No more than 550 new homes will now be built on what is currently Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Knowle, down from 850, with townhouses replacing a number of the apartment buildings adjacent to Redcatch Park.

A Broadside Holdings spokesperson said: “We’re really pleased the local community feels we have listened to what they have said.
“We’ve spent a lot of time with community groups and local residents to help design a scheme that better reflects what local people want, but one we can still actually deliver.
“If this application is approved, we will then prepare a full detailed ‘reserved matters’ application which we will, again, consult the community on.”

The spokesperson added: “As we previously reported, the shopping centre’s car park has now been closed due to significant deterioration.
“Partly because of health and safety concerns, and partly to allow the redevelopment to start, we are currently undertaking a phased closure of the shopping centre.
“We will continue to work with the local community to make this transition as easy as possible.
“This includes working to keeping the dentist, library and pharmacy open during the phased demolition and construction to maintain key local services as far as possible.”
