Student charged with murder of housemate
A man has been charged with the murder of his 21-year-old housemate.
Zach Coughlan, 23, was arrested on Sunday after the victim, Jamie Collins, was discovered in the early hours of Thursday in the garden of their shared house on Cleve Road in Filton.
Coughlan, who like Collins was a student at UWE, has been remanded in custody. He is due to appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Detective chief inspector Lucy Edgeworth, of Avon & Somerset Police’s major crime investigation team, said: “Our thoughts are with Jamie’s family at this hugely difficult time and specially-trained officers are offering them support and keeping them regularly updated with our investigation.
“People who knew Jamie will be understandably shocked and hugely saddened to learn of what has happened.”
Neighbourhood police officers have carried out high-visibility patrols to reassure residents and are working with UWE staff to offer support to students.
